“SENIOR ADAPTIVE LIVING PROGRAM”
Helping legally blind, older adults stay active and independent
Legally blind older adults are entitled to FREE vision rehabilitation services sponsored by the NYS Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (CBVH).
Qualifiers –
Legally blind, Over 55 , Not employed, NYS Resident, living independently
Program includes –
- Low Vision Examination
- Functional vision exam by low vision specialist for prescription of adaptive aids such as magnifiers and special glasses
- Vision Rehabilitation Services
- Vision rehabilitation therapists teach in-home adaptive strategies for daily living; for reading, cooking, cleaning, personal care, technology and financial management.
- Instruction in adaptive vision aids such as talking devices, large print items and writing guides
- Orientation & Mobility
- Instruction in safe indoor and outdoor travel skills
- Travel aids – such as white canes, support canes, ice grippers
- Counseling
- Support to help adjust to vision loss and access resources
